10 Compliments Your Kids Need to Hear

(I heard/read this and thought it was pretty darn good.:)

Children look to their moms for encouragement. Compliments go a long way in giving our kids the boost they need.

1. Compliment their character. We live in a world where integrity is neither consistently taught nor widely expected. When our children demonstrate honesty, kindness, trustworthiness and reliability, that’s a great time to take them aside and offer a sincere compliment.

2. Compliment obedience and respect. It’s too easy to fall into patterns of disapproval, where the only time we notice is when kids do wrong. Rather than waiting for disobedience or disrespect (then coming down like a ton of bricks) try noticing obedience and respect: “I don’t always remember to tell you, but you are an awesome young man, and I appreciate the way you treat your mother”.

3. Compliment them for simply being part of the family. “Every time I see you, I’m thankful that I’m your Mom.” Kids need to understand that they are valued simply because they are.

4. Compliment contributions to the family. “Clearing the table (sweeping the porch… putting out the trash) makes a real difference. I appreciate your contribution.” Kids need to understand that what they do makes a difference, that the adults notice, and that pitching in is a good part of family life.

5. Compliment the quality of their work. “This is one clean porch, mister!” “You mowed the lawn right up to the edge. Way to go! I’m so glad you take this job so seriously, it shows.” Doing a job at a high standard is always worth noting.

6. Compliment the effort, even when the result is not the best. “Your willingness to help makes me happy! Now we need to take a look at how you can get the trash to the curb without leaving a trail!” Compliments can be an important part of our role as teachers.

7. Compliment when they achieve something new. “Wow! That’s a huge leap forward for you there in math, pal.” “Awesome! I’m not at all surprised after you worked so hard.” A well-placed compliment can keep a positive ball rolling.

8. Compliment their sense of style even if we don’t exactly share their taste. We don’t want to force our kids into being clones of us. “When it comes to putting together an outfit, you certainly have some flair!” “I can tell that you put a lot of thought into the way you look.” “I’ve never seen a table set quite like that before – you have an amazing imagination!” It’s not useful to limit compliments to the narrow range of our own taste.

9. Compliment steps toward a long-term goal. “Son, the improvement you’re showing is commendable. Thanks for trying.” Waiting for perfection before we’re willing to dish out a compliment is inefficient, may dampen enthusiasm, and does little to help the process of growth.

10. Compliment their friends. But only do this when you can do it honestly! “Your friends are the greatest!” “That Jake is such a good kid.” “You know, it gives me a lot of confidence to know you use common sense in choosing your friends.”

New Recipe

I saw this idea on Studio 5.  It's chili and cornbread in a mason jar.  You just put whatever kind of chili you like on the bottom with cornbread dough on the top and bake it.  I'm going to try it soon.  The idea for this recipe came from a blog called www.iowagirleats.com

Craft time again

Yep, I was working on another craft.  A friend of mine gave this to me last year, hopefully I'll get it finished this holiday season.

When Bailee saw me painting, she wanted to paint too and so did Ashton.

Second Snow, First Play

We got another skiff of snow yesterday.  We got the kids bundled up to go out to play while Jeff did a bit of snow shoveling.  This was Ashton's first time for putting on snow gear.  :D

Not much snow, but they still had fun.  It was chilly willy!

Natural Light

The sun looked so pretty shining through the Christmas lights.

Eek!

The other day I walked down the hallway to discover this lovely mess.  The girls were making up their beds, which they don't often do, and decided to do some deep cleaning.  It's a little scary how many stuffed animals Madison once slept with.  I think she sleeps with 5 now, more manageable than the 12 she had on there.

They did a really nice job on their beds and they've done pretty well at keeping up their good work.  Eventually the floor got all cleaned up too. :)

6 months

Here's a picture of Bailee and Rooks.  Rooks turned 6 months old today.  I watch him twice a week, I would watch him more but my own kids keep me pretty busy.  I might be able to watch him more next year when Bailee's in school full time, we'll see.  Anyway, he's a sweet boy, he smiles and laughs a lot.  I discovered today that his bottom 2 front teeth are just starting to come in.  I'm thankful that Rooks is able to be a part of our lives.

Christmas Crafts

We did some cute little crafts at our ward's recent Super Saturday.  I signed up for quite a few, so I was pretty busy.  I got a start on all of them, so I would know what I was doing, but I had to finish all of them at home.  I was proud of myself for getting 3 of the crafts finished that evening.

I'm going to put some ear muffs on the snowman, I think it needs a little something up top.

I also made a candy cane decoration wrapped in brown string, I need to make some more and post a picture.  I used my first one on a different craft that I'm giving someone for Christmas.  I don't want them getting a sneak peek of their gift, so I'm not posting it on here yet.

Good Idea, Mom

The girls really enjoyed decorating the gingerbread houses this year.

I hot glued the houses together instead of trying to stick 'em together with frosting, which is a pain.  The houses stayed together much better.  They might be less authentic, but who cares.  I didn't even get any 2nd degree burns while gluing them.  I've gotten enough blisters from the hot glue gun lately, thanks to my crafts.

I love Christmas time!

Dinosaur Square

A few nights ago we took the kids to the old dinosaur museum grounds to see the Christmas lights.

We brought along some hot chocolate and picked up some ice cream cones for the kids from McDonald's.

Jeff wearing his warm hat.  He realized a few minutes later he had it on backwards, opps!  ha ha!  Just seeing him with this hat on cracks me up.

Here is a picture of a man sleeping in the library.  Jeff dared me to take a picture of him, I tried to get a better shot, but I was afraid he would see me, so I hid behind the big column.

Cute Bailee

Ashton getting a little too far away for our comfort.

We didn't realize until we got closer, they were having a meeting in one of the rooms on the right.  Yikes!  We booked it out of there.

Yay, the hat's on the correct way!

A view of the library.

Ashton thoroughly enjoyed running around the place.  He was a blur running circles around me.
